The climate crisis threatens the lives of millions of people, the extinction of one-sixth of all species on earth, catastrophic storms, devastation of coastal cities, epidemics and crop failures. It seems that most of the public lacks a sense of urgency for what must be done to reduce the worst effects of climate change.

If you were to define “a gem in the sea”, what words would you use? Beautiful beaches? Sandy shores? Rocky shoals? Undisturbed? Full of rare and endangered plants and birds? Contains fresh water?
This summer, the Atlantic Chapter welcomed a new staff member to our team. Elizabeth Ahearn, an Albany area native, is the Chapter’s new Conservation Program Associate.

The Sierra Club’s Atlantic Chapter, which encompasses all of New York State, seeks to hire a professional editor for our quarterly newsletter, the Sierra Atlantic, the Chapter’s major publication. It appears in both printed and online editions. Both formats may be seen here.
The Chapter’s volunteer Sierra Atlantic Committee oversees the content of the Sierra Atlantic and will work with the editor to solicit articles and edit article content.

On April 18, 2019, the NY City Council passed the Climate Mobilization Act, also referred to as NYC’s Green New Deal, which comprises nine bills that were enacted into law. A new NYC department, the Office of Building Energy and Emissions Performance, will be established in the Department of Buildings to implement and enforce the Climate Mobilization Act.
