Tuckahoe, New York: New Hotel on a Toxic Waste Dump?

Tuckahoe, a small village of just over 6,000 in Westchester County, has been faced with a dilemma for well over a year. A developer wants to construct a new Marriott Springhill Suites hotel on top of a long-dormant property that once served as a dumping ground for all manner of hazardous wastes. Should the village promote development, putting the property to use?

Petition to LIRR
The Long Island Group of the Atlantic Chapter and other environmental organizations on Long Island have recently petitioned the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to enhance the train stations in Hicksville and Jamaica to conform with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building standards, or even net-zero energy standards in their make-overs, and also to install solar panels at the stations.
